Disadvantages of Biometric Devices

Even though biometrics improves security in organizations, there are certain disadvantages to these devices. One of the main disadvantages to a fingerprint biometric device is that ones fingerprint changes with time, which can cause problems in identifying the fingerprint. Other disadvantages of the fingerprint are public perceptions and privacy concerns.

A few disadvantages of iris biometrics include difficulties being captured for some people and can also be easily covered by eyelashes, lenses and reflections. Also this device requires much more training than most other devices, which means more expenses for organizations.

Hair, glasses and accessories can obstruct face recognition biometrics like the iris. The face also changes over time. Hand geometry and speech recognition on the hand, is not distinctive enough especially in big organizations.
